Probiotics Possess Antiobesity Effects After High-Fat Diet

Probiotics counteract some of the damaging effects of a high-fat diet, researchers observed in a rodent study epublished in October 2016.

Mice fed a high-fat diet for 8 weeks received one of the following probiotics: Lactobacillus casei IBS041, Lactobacillus acidophilus AD031, Bifidobacterium bifidum BGN4, or Bifidobacterium longum BORI. Supplementation with 
B. longum markedly inhibited weight gain without influencing food consumption and significantly reduced total cholesterol concentration in the liver. Hepatic triglyceride levels significantly declined in mice given 
L. acidophilus and B. bifidum. Furthermore, L. acidophilus and B. bifidumadministration markedly suppressed serum aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) levels. And administration of L. acidophilus
B. bifidum, and B. longum reduced hepatocyte hydropic degeneration and hepatic steatosis.

The researchers concluded that of the 4 probiotics used in the study, 
B. longumB. bifidum, and L. acidophilus demonstrated antiobesity effects and inhibited hepatic lipid deposition.
